Planning

Historical Context

The Koala Conservation Reserve was established by Phillip Island Nature Parks in response to the historical decline of the local koala population due to habitat loss. The area was once farmland, but has since been painstakingly revegetated with native trees, particularly Manna Gums, the koalas' primary food source. The creation of the treetop boardwalks in the 1990s revolutionized koala viewing, allowing for close encounters without stressing the animals, setting a new standard for responsible wildlife tourism in Australia.

Photography Tips

  • A telephoto or zoom lens is highly recommended to get detailed shots of koalas without disturbing them
  • Flash photography is strictly forbidden as it can frighten and harm the koalas' sensitive eyes
  • Use a fast shutter speed to avoid blur, as you'll be shooting handheld
  • Look for interesting compositions that include the eucalyptus leaves and branches to give context to your shots
  • Be patient and wait for a koala to wake up or move for more dynamic photos.

Insider Tips

  • Koalas are often more active in the cooler parts of the day, so aim for a morning or late afternoon visit
  • Bring binoculars for a closer look at koalas that may be higher up in the trees
  • Listen for the distinctive bellowing sounds of male koalas
  • Take your time and walk slowly – you'll spot much more than if you rush through.

An Unforgettable Koala Encounter!

This was the highlight of our trip to Phillip Island. The treetop boardwalks are brilliant - you get so close to the koalas without disturbing them. We saw at least a dozen, including a mother with a joey! Knowing our ticket helps protect them makes it even more special. Booking online was simple and we just showed the QR code on our phone. Highly recommended!

Peaceful and beautiful.

A truly serene experience. Walking through the bushland and spotting koalas napping in the trees was so relaxing. The reserve is beautifully maintained and the conservation work they do is so important. It's not a zoo; it's a genuine sanctuary. We also saw some wallabies hopping around. A must-do for any nature lover.

Good experience, very natural.

It was very nice to see the koalas in a natural setting, not in cages. The boardwalk system is very clever. It was quite busy when we went, so it was sometimes a bit crowded at the best viewing spots. My advice is to go on a weekday if you can. The booking process was efficient, no problems at all.

Magical for the whole family!

My children were absolutely mesmerized! Being able to see the koalas at eye level was something they will never forget. The paths are very easy to walk, even for my youngest. We spent almost two hours here just watching them sleep and eat. A wonderful, educational, and heartwarming day out.

Excellent conservation work.

As a photographer, I was very impressed. The opportunities to photograph koalas in their natural habitat are superb. The staff were very knowledgeable and happy to answer questions about their conservation efforts. It is clear this is a place that truly cares for the animals. The entry was smooth with the pre-booked ticket.

A lovely walk.

A pleasant and easy walk through the gum trees. We saw several koalas, though most were sleeping very high up! Patience is key. The visitor centre is informative and the shop has some nice souvenirs. A worthwhile stop if you are on Phillip Island.

The best way to see koalas.

Forget the zoos where you see them from a distance. This is the real deal. The raised boardwalks are a genius idea. You feel like you're right there with them in the treetops. The air smells of eucalyptus and it's just a fantastic sensory experience. Booking through the partner site was a breeze.

Heartwarming and important.

I was so moved by the conservation story behind this reserve. Seeing these beautiful animals thriving because of this initiative is wonderful. The walk is beautiful, the koalas are adorable, and the whole experience feels authentic and meaningful. Easy to find and plenty of parking available.
